My income tax withholding appear to be different than what I would have expected (too high, too low, etc.). What can I do about that?
We (Oscar) cannot advise you on how to fill out the form based on your personal circumstances. We have found that the 2020 W-4 changes are more confusing than previous years, due to its most significant change being that there are no allowances being used to calculate income withholding going forward. Employees we are no longer able to update exemptions/allowances using numbers (0,1,2 etc.). Instead it is done using a dependent dollar amount which is utilized as part of the new calculation, which takes into account credits you would normally receive during the tax filing period at the end of the year. The lower the dependent amount, the higher the tax withholding. Employees always have the ability to elect additional tax withholdings. We also strongly advise you to utilize the instructions provided below or reach out to a tax advisor for assistance with the correct set up for your personal tax situation Further information can be found here: The IRS has also published Frequently Asked Questions that you may find helpful as you complete the form IRS FAQs on the 2020 Form W-4. They have also set up an IRS’s Tax Withholding Estimator (www.irs.gov/W4App).
